CrossRoads Shooting Sports is Johnston, Iowa's premier indoor shooting range and gun store, located at 5550 Johnston Drive just off the Merle Hay exit #131 on I-80/35. The facility features 17 military-grade indoor shooting lanes at up to 25 yards with modern shooting booths and automated target retrieval systems. CrossRoads accepts rifle calibers up to 7.62x51 and shotgun slugs, and offers walk-in range use with no reservations required. Lane fees are priced per day rather than per hour, giving shooters unlimited time unless wait lists develop. Date Night on Fridays offers two shooters for $29.99. The pro shop stocks firearms, ammunition, targets, and accessories, and CrossRoads offers gunsmithing, FFL transfers, and suppressors. Training covers Iowa Permit to Carry courses, the Armed Women of America Des Moines Chapter, and additional classes. Competitive shooters can participate in the CrossRoads Shooting Club (USPSA), GSSF Indoor League, Friday Night Pins bowling pin competition, and the Black Rifle Club membership program. Group and private events are available by arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are your hours?

CrossRoads is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 10am to 7pm. Closed Tuesday. Saturday 9am to 6pm (members only 9am-10am, public from 10am). Sunday noon to 5pm. Last shooters go on the range 1 hour before close. Check the event calendar at crossroadsshooting.com for holiday hours.

How does pricing work?

CrossRoads charges a day rate rather than per hour — the first shooter pays $23.50, a second shooter on the same lane pays $15, and a minor with an adult pays $5. Do I need a reservation?

No reservations — CrossRoads is walk-in only. Complete your liability waiver in advance at crossroadsshooting.com to speed up check-in.

What calibers are allowed?

CrossRoads accepts all handgun calibers and rifle calibers up to 7.62x51 (.308 Winchester). Shotguns are allowed with slugs only. Ammunition must be factory new — no reloads. When in doubt about a specific caliber, ask the staff.

Do you offer Permit to Carry training?

Yes. CrossRoads offers Iowa Permit to Carry courses and hosts the Armed Women of America Des Moines Chapter. See the training page at crossroadsshooting.com/training/ for the current schedule.
